The combination of last year's Monument Fire and seasonal monsoon rains damaged a 26 mile pipeline that has been bring water to the town since 1881. The town depends on this water for its very survival. But the Forest service has been searching for every possible excuse to deny access to make repairs. Enter the Spotted Owl.

Wilson discusses what, in his view, the French philosopher got right, and what he got wrong. In the course of the article he compares Tocqueville's views with that of the Founders.

The Republicans Bought the WI Recall Election … NOT!

Last night I engaged in a wee bit of gloating at the video of one of the losers trying to unseat Wisconsin's Governor Walker. He claimed that it was the end of life as we know it in America. He picked up on the Narrative - e.g. the big bad Republicans bought this election. Hogwash!

An Important Distinction

The Spring 2012 issue of The Claremont Review of Books features an essay by John Marini in which he explains this distinction between a constitution and a government. Marini’s thesis is that “constitutionalism as a theoretical doctrine is no longer meaningful in our politics.” Like most of the essays featured in the CRB, this one was thought provoking. The essay is quite extensive in its scope and depth. We will look at one aspect that caught this writer’s attention: Our Constitution is not our government.
