Open Sesame (Street)
Who knew that when Mitt Romney said those four words, “I love Big Bird,†it would have caused such a stir? Of course, he mentioned Big Bird in relation to ending federal subsidies to PBS. President Obama and his liberal base were outraged. Apparently liberals can’t get through a week without their subsidized episodes of (Best of) Joy of Painting or Sewing with Nancy. Naturally, Big Bird got all the press and, in an effort to relive Obama’s stellar debate performance, his campaign spent the next week talking about little else. Read the rest of this entry »

The Campaign So Far – The Tale of the Tapes
A video floats around on You Tube for a few weeks. It’s suddenly “discovered†and it is used as a pretext for righteous indignation that leads to demonstrations and riots. The Muslim reaction to the Mohammed video? No, the press reaction to Romney’s “47%†video. Read the rest of this entry »

How Do You Spell Love? R-I-O-T
It’s a good thing that President Obama hit that reset button on Middle East foreign policy once he took office. Otherwise, things would be a little tense right now. Read the rest of this entry »

We’re Sorry – For Bad Movies
Since we are officially apologizing for movies, I think we should really do it. It is time that America publicly and officially apologizes for Pluto Nash (or any other Eddie Murphy movie post-Beverly Hills Cop), Rocky III, IV and V, Gigli, anything starring Adam Sandler, the Expendables 2, Mars Needs Moms, the Scary Movie series and Deuce Bigelow. And we’re really, really sorry for Battleship – The Movie. If anyone ought to riot over a movie, the patrons who sat through that schlock should get first dibs. Read the rest of this entry »

The Campaign So Far – Democratic Convention Edition
The question often asked of Democrats during their convention was “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?†When they weren’t being evasive, many Democrats simply struggled to answer the question as if it were a calculus equation. For me, the answer is an unequivocal “No†– the government owns a car company, we no longer own our healthcare and Steve Nash now plays for the Lakers. Read the rest of this entry »

The Campaign So Far – Republican Convention Edition
Prior to the start of the Republican convention, Barack Obama held a fundraiser that included several current and former NBA players. Obama commented during the fundraiser that he wasn’t used to being the fifth or sixth most interesting person in the room. His implication was that he is usually the most interesting person in the room. Look, even when he and Mrs. Obama have tucked themselves in for the night in their White House bedroom, I’m not sure that even then he is the most interesting person in the room. Spongy Conduits
Spongy conduits is a term conjured up by a Congressional Budget Office staffer to describe the government subsidy benefits retained by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That he came up with this term in a CBO report in 1996 is even more remarkable, given what we now know following the collapse of the housing market in 2008. The CBO report at that time concluded “Congress may want to revisit the special relationship that exists between the government and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.†That is bureaucrat speak for “Holy S*#t!†Read the rest of this entry »

The Campaign So Far
The Romney campaign has suggested that the Obama administration has some responsibility for the current economic conditions, especially the national debt, including an $800 billion stimulus that didn’t stimulate and that he, Romney, can do better. The Obama campaign has responded with “Dog on the roof! Dog on the roof! Dog on the roof!†Read the rest of this entry »
