A Letter from The USS United States

This week’s puzzle is taken from an article we found in the Niles National Register.  It is an excerpt of a letter from an officer serving on the frigate United States and provides a glimpse of the times.  The writer probably did not realize that his remarks would be printed in the newspaper!  His opinions on the Spanish are interesting if not terribly flattering.
